Multitudes

2016 - Tillandsia recurvata, glue

Multitudes exemplifies the concept of layered meanings and parts which pervades a systems approach to art. The piece contains hundreds of individual ball moss plants (T. recurvate), each representing singular ecosystems sustaining thousands of insects and microorganisms. This work is living and self-sustaining; over time, the plants will completely overgrow their frameworks, disguising the words underneath in a mass of greenery. Referencing the natural processes through which ancient man-made structures are overtaken by vegetation, this piece places it’s materials and shapes into competition.
